I want you to sit quietly. Turn off the TV; the music; close the door; eliminate anything that will distract you because I want your full attention. Millions have been converted because one man waited to hear the voice of God. Saul "fell to the earth and heard that voice" and he kept on hearing that voice. The Lord spoke man-to-man with him.
Peter allowed the Savior's voice to come to him. "Peter went up to the housetop to pray . . . and there came a voice to him” (Acts 10:9, 13). As a result, the entire Gentile race was welcomed into the kingdom, along with the house of Cornelius, all because one man obeyed a voice.
We are living in the same New Testament times as Paul and Peter and John and Phillip and Thomas and just like them; we must allow His voice to speak to us. In fact, He is more urgent to speak to you, as you are to hear from Him! But as the writer to the Hebrew church said, "Today, if you will hear His voice . . . do not harden your heart," do not stop-up your ears and ignore that Word. Imagine what God could do with Christians who learn to hear from heaven!
Instead of waiting for His voice to come to us, what do we do? We run to counselors and Christian psychologists, one session or another, and read books and listen to tapes — wanting to hear from God. We are looking for a clear word of direction for our lives and want pastors to tell us what is right and wrong. We desire a leader to follow, a diagram for the future. But few know how to go to the Lord and hear His voice. Sure, many know how to get God's attention — to touch God — but they know nothing about God reaching out to them — it is all one-sided. We go to our Father, but don't let our Father come to us.
"Let the person who has ears listen!" (Matthew 11:15).
Our Father wants to shake the earth once more —
Shoot, he intends to shake you!
"Be careful that you do not refuse to listen when God speaks. Your ancestors didn’t escape when they refused to listen to God, who warned them on earth. We certainly won’t escape if we turn away from God, who warns us from heaven. When God spoke to your ancestors, his voice shook the earth. But now he has promised, 'Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the sky'" (Hebrews 12:25-26).
He is telling all believers, "Once again you can hear my voice. Those who hear will shake the earth, and it will move heaven and earth. By the hearing of my voice, whatsoever is loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
To the last church, the Laodicean church, the Lord cries:
"I’m standing at the door and knocking. If anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I’ll come in and we’ll eat together" (Revelation 3:20).
This might be the most personal message the Lord has spoke you in a long time, but this morning, right where you are sitting, the Lord is staring into your eyes and saying, "I'm asking to be heard. Open up. Let me into your secret closet. Open your heart and let's fellowship: you and me. Eye-to-eye, heart-to-heart. That's how I will keep you free from any temptations."
Oh, Father, you are my Lord and my King, and I kneel before you broken and submitted to your voice — and your voice alone. Break me any way you need to; Shape my heart to reflect your Glory. Burn from my heart the dross that hinders our communion.
My heart is open, speak Lord. You know me better than any man does, or even could—even better than I know myself. Your Prophet Amos assured me that you would do nothing without first revealing His secret to His servants the prophets (Amos 3:7), so please reveal what I can receive.
